In a Virginia PDR mixed-use zone, the Baumanns needed a building that combines an advertising office and home, yet projects a residential character. They wanted it to blend with the outdoors and take advantage of their mountain views.
During warmer months, the house captures cooling breezes to keep airconditioning bills low. The house blocks fierce mountain winter winds in a south-facing courtyard that beckons the family outside year round. The courtyard wall gently separates business parking from private spaces.
With many built-ins and flowing spaces, the 2,800-square-foot building feels much grander. It accommodates large parties, cozy family gatherings and keeps the business separate from family life.
Special features: radiant floor heat, roof angled for future solar panels, counter heights set for family members, wheelchair accessible throughout. With the addition of a simple elevator (foundation already in place), the house is 100 percent ADA compliant.
